In British Columbia's past, only the outer coast and islands were not occupied Grizzly Bear habitat.
Today, humans have densely settled 8% of the original habitat which is now lost to Grizzly Bear occupation. A further 11% has been significantly altered requiring recovery programs which have been initiated. Seasonally, humans occupy an additional 25%. Humans also work, recreate, and travel in much of the remaining areas.
In those parts of BC where Grizzly Bears have been extirpated, the habitat has often been significantly altered for farming or completely destroyed by urbanization and industrialization.
